About Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the capital and the principal city of Netherlands. The “Venice of North” as it is also called; the city has more than one hundred kilometers of canals and about hundred and fifty bridges. The city was planned in the early 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age and is thus well managed and controlled. The three main canals, Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht form concentric circles around the city known as the Grachtengordel and are a delight. These canals are a magnificent way to look around the city as they house about 1500 monumental buildings alongside. Other notable canals worth visiting are the Singel, Herengracht, Keizergracht and Prinsengracht.

Amsterdam has a splendid heritage culture and a blend of well bred architecture. From Wooden plank houses to brick roads of 17th century; all the intricacies are well preserved in the museums of the city. The most important museums are located on the Museum Square. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is the most renowned Dutch National Museum and is committed to arts, crafts, paintings and history. It is a large crowd puller. Other prominent museums are The Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, Joods Historisch Museum and the Tropenmuseum. Other places for which Amsterdam is known all over are the famous Anne Frank House where Anne Frank hid herself from the Nazis, the Hermitage Amsterdam which was opened to public in 2009 and the unusually government permitted Cannabis coffee shops where the consumption of marijuana for personal interest is legalized.

Amsterdam is also the business capital of Netherlands. Seven of the top 500 companies are located here. The Zuidas district which is the key business district of Amsterdam houses headquarters of various multinationals. Amsterdam also offers various cheap hotels in and around the city where guests can stay for their trip to Amsterdam. An additional ground for Amsterdam’s popularity is the legalized prostitution designated in the area known as De Wallen. This is the most well known red light district and offers a number of sex shops, peep shows and sex theatres. For shopping, tourists are suggested to visit Pieter Cornelisz Hooftstraat and Cornelis Schuytstraat located in the vicinity of the Vondelpark.
